A 50 year old Nigerian, Gbenga Fadipe has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by Judge Scott Wisch in 372nd District Court for stealing about $700,000 from the city of Fort Worth in an internet phishing scam.
Note that Gbenga Fadipe is also best friends with another conman Abidemi Rufai who was recently arrested at the JFK Airport in Los-Angeles. They are seen in the video below enjoying the good life in Nigeria. According to FortWorth Star-Telegram Fadipe who pleaded to theft of property greater than $300,000 was involved in an email scam.
In his arrest warrant Affidavit Gbenga Fadipe in October 2017 was said to have requested a change of account payable to the city Accounts department by sending scam emails using the names of two employees of Imperial Construction. One of the names was legitimate. He asked the Accounts department to change an electronic deposit from Plains Capital Bank to a Chase Bank account and included a copy of a check with the new account and routing numbers. Fort Worth’s Account Payable department consequently made the change of bank accounts with the belief that Imperial Construction had changed banks, according to the emails received. Fadipe who had access to the new Chase Bank account which payments where being transferred to began to make a series of withdrawals of thousands of dollars in cash from Houston bank machines. The employees of Imperial Construction reported to the Authorities through the company that their signatures had been forged.
Fadipe liquidated funds totaling $693,625.77 within 2 weeks, and then flew from the United States to London and Nigeria to cool off. He eventually returned to the United States and was arrested near Houston.
Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney Sharen Wilson said in a statement.“If criminals are deciding who to target, and they know Tarrant County judges are giving sentences like this, they may avoid this area in the future,”. Birchett alleged that he reported to city officials that the city’s cybersecurity had been severely compromised, and claimed that the city had lied about its compliance with FBI crime database regulations and had left city employees’ medical and personal information accessible to anyone with internet access.
One of the casualties of Fadipe’s his internet fraud was and senior Information Technology manager William Birchet who was fired from his job in retaliation for reporting the technology troubles he discovered. Birch testified in a law suit he filed in May 2019 under consideration in the Court of Appeals for the 5th District of Texas that the city mismanaged the Fadipe theft and other security breaches causing him to be forced out of his job. Beyond the financial loss, city employees with criminal convictions were allowed access to a confidential FBI criminal database.
When his warnings of non-compliance were not heeded Birchett reported the security breaches to law enforcement agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and Fort Worth police, the lawsuit states. In retaliation, he was placed on administrative leave and ultimately fired. City officials have said that additional safeguards have been implemented to be certain banking information updates are properly reviewed.
