A video has surfaced of a road side fracas between a driver and Vehicle Inspection Officer popularly known as VIO in Nigeria resulting in severe body injuries to the officer. The incident was reported to have occured on Monday 17th May 2021, at about 12:27pm Mobolaji Bank Anthony Ikeja Lagos.
The commercial driver was said to have dropped off a soldier on the express and within a few seconds the Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) accosted him to conduct a vehicle inspection and demanded for his particulars. After enyering the vehicle the VIO instrtcted the driver to pull over. But the driver refused to comply but instead attempted to escape with the Inspection officer inside. The officer upon noticing the drivers attempt to escape proceeded to struggle over the steering wheel with the driver.

The driver commenced distribution of quality blows and was extremely violent to the VIO officers while he kept crying and c
lamenting that he had seen hell from the VIOs on previous inspection exercises in the past. He claimed he had lost a lot of personal cash to pay for his arrest and that companies dont reimburse him.
Though the VIO officers were professional not to have engaged the driver in a fight. It was observed that even though the vehicle in question has it’s complete papers, and the driver did not comply with the inspection process but rather panicked and opted to engage in fistcuffs with the officers.
At some point the driver attacked one of the VIO and bit-off his flesh deeply with his teeth.
The vehicle was later towed and the driver ran away.

The VIO department should be equipped with modern day technology to track and apprehend offenders. The VIO officers should avoid jumping into suspects vehicles as this could pose a danger to their lives and other by standers especially if they encounter a crazy driver.
Lagos state should equip its security personnel with tracking devices and street cameras for the roads of Lagos. Lagos State government should ensure all safety of it’s state security agents and supports it’s federal agents technological wise. The state government can also attach mobile policemen to the VIO unit to mitigate threats to their lives while on duty because they don’t bear arms.
